I helped a dog get back to it's owner a few days ago. The dog was in the road and kept running out into traffic. People were swerving and slamming on their brakes to at least try to keep from hitting him, but NOBODY else stopped to help him.

I stopped and got him, called his owners, and made sure he got home. People were honking at me, rolling down their windows to scream at me, flipping me off, and cussing me for making traffic slow down. We're not talking a major traffic back-up here - it might have taken them 15 seconds longer to get through the area - there isn't even a signal light there to have to wait for.

Are we too busy now? Too heartless? Too self centered?

Do you personally feel that we have a responsibility to help others (including animals) when able, or do you feel that your only responsibility is to you and yours? I DO feel that it is our obligation to help others when the opportunity is given.

All answers welcome! Thanks!

Personally I feel the same with people, whether it is lacking common sense or just plain rudeness, People these days can't even take 2 seconds out of their busy day to do 1 act of kindness and if we all did this once a day, from a simple gesture like letting a car into your lane or something for example, the world would be a better place. I am originally from New Brunswick where if you were stopped at the side of the road, the first car that came by would help and you would also get the shirt of their back and more than likely be invited home for dinner, then I moved to Toronto to be discusted with this dog eat dog mentality, I even have found myself caught in the trap ocassionaly then i have to stop and think of where i come from and where my values are. I think that it is not people in general are born cold hearted but the busier the city is and the more the population is everybody is more out for only themselves, which is evident on tv when they do these studies of human behaviour, honesty, and general hospitality and compassion for others. Thankfully there is still some genuinely good people out there, but the majority (the opposite) is staggering. Even the children are more rude and mi9sbehaved then ever, People rush through life and disregard everything else. But I believe in karma and I feel good doing the smallest good deeds that the next person probably wouldn't think twice about and as long as you feel good and proud, that is all that matters people close to you will see that to, and eventually good things will happen in return. Thank you for being one of the few out there that have compassion for other people. You truly make the world a better place.

Gosh, I just had this conversation with someone yesterday. I think we certainly have become self centered and live in a society where everything is rush, rush, rush. Sadly, in many circles unkindness and lack of heart is prevalent. Many today do not take the time to build friendships or develop deep relationships where one can learn the skills of getting along with others and of showing concern. .If some have to wait 2 minutes for the ATM machine to spit out their money, they get annoyed, etc. We have technology that takes us all over the world in seconds. We have become an impatient and often demanding and spoiled society of individuals. There is something to be said about sitting and actually talking to someone and learning to be a concerned person who is listening and aware of another's needs...

I live in a small town in the country. I often take Jessie, my dog, with me for rides. The next town over things are a little busier, a little more active. One day, Jessie jumped out of the car when I stopped to get gas, and she became so confused by all of the cars that she ran up and down. I couldn't catch her because she was so confused by it all.She stood there barking because she had never really been exposed to so many cars while she was outside of the vehicle. ..( she had never done anything like this before) To their credit, every car within the area stopped and waited patiently. One lady got out of her own car and sweet-talked Jessie into coming back over to me, in my car, on the other side of the road. The lady opened the door and Jessie jumped in, all happy. .. I was impressed that those who were sitting in line were so considerate.

I know it is an old line, but I guess the truth is that the only way we can change things is to be different ourselves and do exactly what you did.. Show concern for another, whether it be a human or animal friend. Thumbs up to you!

Yes, it would seem so, I hope not, probably and yes- I do feel that it is our responsibility. Thank you for caring and taking the time to do this. You may have saved more lives than just the dogs life, including those that gave you the finger, honked and were bahaving so obnoxiously. If he had been hit and there had been a pile up they would have had to wait a lot longer than 15 seconds.

In today's world most people are too self centered to care about a poor animal. It's a good thing it had you to look after it.

Too often, people are rushing to get from point A to point B. They surely don't want some "animal lover" stopping them from getting to their destination (hence you being flipped off and cussed at).

Don't worry, you did the right thing. The animal is safe and his owners are happy.

The idiots that didn't stop to help or gave you rude guestures have never heard of Karma!

you sound like a kind compassionate person. I agree with your philosophy about helping people and animals too when the opportunity is there. So, as a dog owner, I would like to personally thank you for returning that dog safely home. I beleive in Karma and yours is good. There are actually a lot of kind people out there, sometimes they're hard to find

I think that was very thoughtful of you. I think that this world is in an uproar today. There are too many people trying to play me-first games. It doesn't make for a very happy society. I am tired of the way people deal with others. Like trying to second guess people and put their baggage onto others. Playing the blame game and making life more difficult than it already is. That is what it feels like to me. I have neighbors who are quite unneighborly too. Sometimes I have to close people out of my life just to get order and think straight. And sometimes I found that it was easier just to be with my animals. Because animals are more caring than people are at times. I hope the dog is happily back at home with his family and the good deed you did got appreciated.

What you did was fantastic! I would have done the same thing!
I think a lot of people are just too focused on their own priorities to make time to help others (animals included), not all people are like this (you're an example!) but many aren't unfortunately.
We need more considerate people like you in this world!

I have rescued many dogs from the road, I love animals and wouldnt ever let them get hurt if I could help it. Some people are just in it for themselves and they suck if you ask me. I hate how people dont care for animals or anything else for that matter. I'm so glad you stopped to help him, if it werent for people like you and me some animals would be dead and the owners would be sad. Good job!!

Generally speaking, people have an attitude that someone else will do it and that their time is more valuable than everyone elses.

There was a story in my local paper recently about a diabetic man who collapsed in a ditch while out for a walk in his subdivision, and people slowed down as they drove by but no one stopped to help. Kids ran and told their parents he was there and they didn't call for help. He died.
