I would guess that most who act as if they believe they're better than fellow human beings have profound insecurities. Those with a healthy balance of confidence and humility realize they are no better than their neighbors and that, but for grace, luck, or favorable circumstances early in life, they could be starving or sitting on death row. Unfortunately, our society applauds ruthless aggression in business and machismo in personal affairs, perpetuating the problem.
