Very painful to the touch. My breasts were hot as well with mutiple red spots on them. Fever as well. You will need to check with your doctor. Mine made me pump and dump as he didn't want me feeding my child out of the infected breast until I had been on the antibiotics for a couple of days. Luckily, I had enough stored for a few days.

Oh my goodness - I've had it very bad about 5 times. You can have a mild infection or a serious one. If you take lots of lecithin you can ward one off without antibiotics most of the time. Mastitis presents with a red lump which is an infection in one of your milk glands. The best thing for it is to let baby drink milk more frequently to clear it up for you. Drinking lots of water helps. Also, when it gets really bad you get aches and pains all over your body so bad that you can hardly stand up along with horrible pain in one or both breasts mostly at the site of the red lump. When it get serious you need antibiotics which will clear it up. If you have recurring mastitis like I do - it can help to take a low level dose of antibiotic while breastfeeding. It's not worth stopping the breastfeeding for if you can get it under control. But if you can't control it - it's time to put baby on formula really. When it gets really bad you develop a fever and chills to top it off! I really don't know how women and their babies survived before antibiotics. I know I never would have survived without them.

Very sore, tender , hot, red breast. I had mastitis once and I ran a pretty high fever. It was around 102, but I usually have a temp. of 97.7. I felt very sick when I had mastitis. It is important to keep breastfeeding when you have it,or at least keep pumping.

I had it years ago it was very sore and painful, I was very worried as it felt as though there was a lump my doctor told me that it was an infection in a milk duct which then caused the mastitis it even looked a bit inflamed, I was given some tablets can't remember what they were as it is so long ago and it cleared up, it was very sore to touch though.

Mastitis feels like the bad end of the flu, but with sore, achy breasts. I would go see your doctor with any concerns. It is a very common problem, however, not one to be taken lightly.

Ouch! Mastitis sucks. It should get better every next day, though. You may need some anti-biotics.

I saw one person mention this, but...DO NOT STOP NURSING!
It will make things worse and as long as you have milk, your breastfeeding relationship is fine.

Also, when feeding your child be sure to position their chin in the direction of the infection and this will help drain your breast thoroughly.

Sometimes your breast is red, you can have a temperature and it hurts to move that side of your arm.
The GP will be able to clear this up with anti biotics and it's important to visit one if you suspect that you may have mastitis.

Hot, painful, maybe lumpy, maybe hard. Mine swelled under my armpit and up into my neck too.

This is the best easily available remedy it worked well -A cabbage leaf down the bra is amazing. Remember to change it every few hours.

drinking red clover and nettle tea may help

Hot flannels may help too.

If you have a herbalist or homeopath they will be able to give you something natural.

I had it when my baby was 2 weeks old. My breasts had red blotches on them and were hard and extremely sore to the touch, even the bra against them was painful. The dr can give you antibiotics which is great. Also I found that putting a fresh cabbage leaf in my bra was very soothing...someone passed on this tip!
