What's all this about Renault spying on Maclaren?

On November 8, 2007 the FIA accused Renault of having McLaren's technical information in their posession.

According to the charge, the information in hand "included the layout and critical dimensions of the McLaren car as well as details of McLaren's fuelling system, gear assembly, hydraulic control system and suspension".

The hearing on this matter will take place in Monaco on December 6, 2007.

The charge faced by Renault F1, breaching of article 151c of the Sporting Regulations, is the same charge that had been put on McLaren's desk earlier on in 2007 in the espionage controversy involving Ferrari & McLaren.

All these spy scandals are really starting to get on my nerves!

Well, a former McLaren employee to be more specific design engineer there, Phil Mackereth (and now suspended Renault employee), who was picked up by Renault took w/ him a few CDs of Macca confidential stuff which included various technical secrets as well as "a novel suspension component used by the 2006 and 2007 McLarens,” to be more exact: the drawings of a tuned mass damper (that was baned by the FIA already so it's useless), the internal layout of the fuel tank, the basic layout of the gear clusters, and a suspension damper. The info was in the hands of Renault from September 2006 until October this year. This is an espionage case in breach of article 151c in the sporting regulations; the same one Macca was in breach of. And the tip came from an ex Renault employee that was moving to Macca. So Renault is set to face the WMSC on December 6, one day before McLaren's 08 faith will be decided.

This season Renault have had many problems with car reliability and just the general aerodynamics. Whereas McLaran have had the best season of there life on the track off the track it has been regrettable with the Ferrari battle and having issues with Alonso. Overall i think Renault are better there 2007 season was in some what a disaster but they are ready to charge forward to enter the race for championship again in the 2008 season.

Dawg (above) said it right.
The ex-Renault-now-McLaren guy who knew about ex-McLaren-now-Renault guy's present to Renault (CDs) told Ron about it, and Ron made him speak. It's a very nice timing on Ron's part - just when Alonso is about to ink the deal with Renault. Now Alonso wouldn't want to go to Renault because, if found guilty, Renault will get a very harsh penalty like McLaren. Very cunning Very revengeful. Now Alonso has to find a seat somewhere...there aren't many good ones left!

Employee leaves Mclaren goes to Renault, takes info on discs, very specific info about the car and suspension components. Different employee leaves Renault drops hint to Mclaren...Mclaren send experts to Renault to analyse computers there. Mclaren launches formal complaint with FIA.

Haven't really heard all the details. I seem to remember this topic being discussed at the height of the scandal. It seemed McLaren had in possession of Ferrari data. Whether or not they have it in their car is subject to debate. The FIA had stated that McLaren must prove that their 2008 car has no Ferrari technology whatsoever before being given approval. As for those secrets leaking out beyond McLaren, of course it'll be disastrous because who knows what they got out of that stolen data? Maybe Renault also got secret Ferrari data along with McLaren's as well? Or is this because Flavio Briatore accused McLaren of stealing Ferrari data & not telling anyone? He was openly criticizing McLaren regarding the impact of what they did to Formula One.

This sort of thing happens in F1 quite a lot, it's no different from any other business but it's only this year that accusations have lead to large fines and exclusions from the manufacturers championship.

well another disgruntled employee taking specs with him to another team. ok, when mclaren had ferrari's specs, they were not going to be punished until it was proved by those emails that they used the data to their benefit. It's not enough to have the data, you have to prove that they used it. Did they? Is there evidence of that? We shall see I guess.
