I don't see any significance...sports, pets, pets who do sports.
I just wish they'd let the users vote on two or three brief "manners" guidelines to put at the heading of each section.
Like if you're going to ask a question for a specific game (like HOWRSE) you need to put it in the title or stand ready to be incinerated by the people who get tired of the same series of questions with ridiculous multiple choice answers over and over and over and over. Really, a newcomer wouldn't know that until it's too late to grab the asbestos BVDs.

Yes - and it leads to a lot of frivilous questions being mixed in some very important and serious ones. A high proportion of questions are to do with competitive riding actually - so they are more 'sport' related. I guess though there are doznes of really good sites that deal with specific issues and this is a very generalist forum.
It's an interesting question though because horses never used to be pets - they worked in some way; stock horses, military horses, carriage horses, draught horses, hunters, pit ponies etc all had a job to do and in some ways were better off for that.
The 'horse as a pet' is a relatively modern phenomenon which emerged with the growth of the leisure industry in the developed world post World War 2.
I also dislike it when someone asks a question without giving vital pieces of information - I also dislike the ones asked by people who clearly just want their already formed opinions to be confirmed.

Well if you rally think about, there is a sport or competition for every pet out there. Horses shouldn't be different. If it was listed under sports, it would have to be just about riding, and not care, too. It was definitely a Yahoo decision, because they're the ones that designed the site.

Before there was a horse section under pets, alot of horse questions were asked under the general pets. Enough people asked for a seperate area for horses and so it was added along with rodents.

It's probably because the majority of non-horse people do not see riding as a sport, because after all, "you just sit there and the horse does all the work".
The other possibility is that they decided to lump all animal categories together, which makes sense.
I'm sure it has nothing to do with whether or not horse owners view their horses as pets or not.

Most horses aren't involved in sports.
When you think of where you would search for horse care and info, pets is the most obvious choice.
Although in the sports section, they only have a horse racing category. I think it should be called Equestrian, as there are other horse sports besides racing.

Well, a horse is generally more than a piece of sports gear so it makes sense to me. ( and I did actually think of this the other day) Makes more sense than bunching it in with football etc.
I tend not to answer vague questions usually and if mine are vague sometimes and someone calls me on it I just add details later, don't see much point in getting worked up about it. Life is stressful enough as it is.

Some people care about their horses like others care about their dogs/cats/rodents/any other pets. Dogs could be used for sport as well, it's not just horses.

I have several friends who have horses. They are just pets that they can ride the ditch banks & mesas on.
We don't live in a big city, in fact we live on the out skirts of a medium city. We own acreage & have plenty of room for them. I myself, do not ride & have never owned a horse but I have lots of dogs on my half acre.
Horse's have a special place in many a heart.
They don't race them to make it a sport. They are just pets.

Horses should be viewed as pets, VS. a piece of sports equipment, they are living, breathing animals with horsenalities!
