There was a study, a few years ago, to find out how much writers get paid in the United States.
This includes anyone who was paid any amount for writing during one year, even if it was just for one magazine article or newspaper editorial, as well as book and screenplay writers.

The average turned out to be about $2000 for the year.

Obviously, some writers got maybe $50 for one article in a small local magazine, while others got enough to live on.
But you can see, there's an awful lot of writers who can't support themselves by writing.

This is why I am against unauthorized, free, on-line books being available. It's stealing from someone who deserves to be paid. Same goes for pirated music.

The only way for an author to make any money is by selling their writing-sometimes it can take years to do that.

If you mean an author who publishes novels for a living, it really depends on how much the author's books sells-for example, J.K. Rowling is one of the richest women in the world, but that's only because a lot of people like her books and they're always on the best-sellers list.

it all depends on the author and the popularity. jk rowling, for example, is paid millions of dollars (or pounds or whatever) because harry potter is popular worldwide. but if the book isn't popular the author won't get that many royalties from the sales or much money from the publisher.

It is very difficult to approximate something so broad.

It depends on pupularity and success.

If you write travel guides that ten people read, you may be able to make a meager living...if you become the next Dan Brown, you're set for life.

It all begins with hard work and creative genius.

It depends on whether or not they get really famous like Stephen King, or mildly famous like Michael Arnzen (whose growing more popular). Most of us don't make it really big and though we get published the salary isn't high enough to live on so we work regular jobs like everyone else and do our writing at night.
The biggest payday is if a movie company buys the rights to your book to make it into a movie.

it varies widely. Why is it you need to know so desperately? Rhetorical.
