You need to go to a pet store and buy a reptile bulb. The lamp itself doesn't matter it's the bulb inside it. It's one that will give off uva AND uvb light waves, the same thing the sun does. A regular light bulb does not do that. The uv A and B rays will help the turtles absorb calcuim (much needed for their shells) and aide in digestion of their food. A heat lamp would be nice too since the UV bulbs usually don't put off enough heat to really do anything.

A normal lamp is fine for heat--be sure to measure the basking temps with a digital probe thermometer. Too hot or too cold can be deadly. And yes, RES require UVB lighting in order to survive. They need the light to metabolize calcium and vitamin D3. Without it, they will get metabolic bone disease (MBD) and die. Use a Reptiglo or Reptisun 5.0 made for reptiles--get it from a pet store. The UVB bulbs must be changed at least every 6 months as they will weaken over time while continuing to put out light. Both heat and UVB lamps should be on timers for 12 hours a day to provide a day/night cycle.

properly, that's no longer basically mild you're offering for the turtle via the mild, that's warmth too. table lamps do no longer regularly generate adequate heat temperature for a turtle to take excitement in. additionally, many species of turtle require UVB bulbs as properly as a warmth lamp, that's an entire distinctive tale.

I had 4 red eared sliders. You need a lamp which provides both heat and vitamins. Your turtles will spend most of the day bathing under it. They do prefer a lot of water wo swim on a regilar basis so you must create a habitat with both. You will also need a ehater for the water. These turtles tend to need more supplies then most pet stores will tell you. Due to their tropical nature if you are to keep them clear of pneumonia these are items you NEED.

Make sure you have a flourescent bulb that puts out ultraviolet B light (most put out A). That plus a regular heat lamp will do.

no! You need a UVB light (which has the sunds rays in it) and a UVB light (for heat). If you dont have these 2 bulbs, your turtles shell will turn out deformed and your turtle will get soft shell (which kills the turtle).
Look over these links- http://redearslider.com/light_sources.html

Make sure that if you get a UVB bulb, its rating is 5.0 NOT 10.0!! Those are to stong and are meant for dessert animals. They will hurt your turtles eyes, causing it to go blind!

You need a special bulb that gives them all the benefits of sunlight. You can probably get one at a good pet store.
