I was in Canada last week and I almost got in a fight due to the ribbing we Americans were taking on our under valued currency. I tried to tell them that our economy was in great shape because our unemployment was less than 5% but that didn't seem to work. What would you have said?

I remember a great joke at the start of the Iraq war about how the Canadians were pledging 20,000 troops, 10 battleships, and 50 jet fighters to the cause. At the then current exchange rate it came out to 4 mounties, 3 canoes, and a flying squirrel! I loved telling that joke. So I guess it's only fair that they now get to have their fun. It's not forever, so show a sense of humor about it. You don't need to fight every time anybody says anything less than glamorous about the U.S. That only reinforces negative stereotypes.

I would have laughed it off, because they're telling the truth. Our economy is not in great shape. Yes, we have a low unemployment record, however, the continuing depreciation of the American dollar should scare the living hell out of you, not make you defend the failing economy that has caused it.

um..do you actual imagine Canadians care what the individuals imagine. We did not go with Bush two times now did we.. ;) Moosehead beer. purely in Canada eh? ;) Edit: Oh boy, shoulda elementary. I absolutely have MANY American friends who I appreciate very a lot. i do no longer 'hate' nor 'dislike' my American cousins..and that i relish it at the same time as a buddy tries to get my goat. ;)

Consider the teasing the Canadians have had to take over the many years when our dollar was greater than there's, "what goes round - comes round".

That's a dumb reason to get into a fight. The value of currency? C'mon. Where are you that the economy is doing great?

Just remember with the Loonie this high all of those people are coming to the USA to buy items so it actually helps USA stores just south of the boarder. Canadian retailers are having to drop prices. But just remember politicans have very little control over the economy. Expecet for maybe some tax cuts. If you canadian friends are memeber of the Liberal party then I harass them Their leader Stephen` Dion is a joke and made the old statement "Do you know how hard it is to make priorities?" Now thats F@#$ Leadership!

Yes, but not at Canada- I've been teasing them for years and I've probably got it coming. I am downright pissed at the Bush Administrations "Ostrich Policy" in dealing with the economy. The problems we're facing now have been evident for the last 5 years or so, and a change of course could have diverted this at anytime.

But if you speak Canadian, then you shouldn't have any problems in Canadia. Just memorize the phrase, "Oh jeez, take off, eh." That should get you out of any trouble.

eh - ours was worth more than yours for almost 50 years - and it meant we came over and spent our money over there.....so I guess we had it coming for developing your economy.......I dunno, I try to be nice to the Canadians....as a department of the United States Parks Service, they just dont know they are practically already americans ;) (I'm kidding, I'm kidding)

And the fact is, our dollar is worth less because we went from being the biggest creditor nation, to the biggest debtor nation....so it had nothing to do with unemployment.

I wouldn't have said anything. I would have stocked up on Canadian currency while I had the chance and before it gets worse.

I remember teasing them about their loony, worth 60 cents at one point. Eh?
