i CAN NOT use a styraphome ball in the middle. any ideas

You could try tinkertoys.

Or use clay instead of styrofoam. Play-doh and pipe cleaners might just do the trick.

I'd advise not making it to scale. Or perhaps you should, really. Take an empty box in with an arrow on a stick. Write on the stick "Oxygen atom, 1:1 scale".
