Honestly, it's not to bypass big business, it's to show that I care enough to actually think about and create something with my time and my effort for those who matter most to me. I'd give big business the money if they had the slightest chance to give my wife and my kids that feeling that their husband or their dad loves them more than anything in the world.
My oldest daughter did something like this for our birthdays this year. She got old mailing boxes and made "scenes" (a beach scene for my wife and a fantasy scene for me) as those represented things she liked to do with us. The scenes were made from paint, miniatures, etc., all stuff we had around the house. While I think they were beautiful, someone else might think not, but no one can deny the time, effort and love that were behind the gift.
Here's hoping that you find something that fits for you.

We have somehow lost the focus on whats important. Size and cost does not determine what is a good gift. I prefer something thoughtful that would be useful and enjoyable to me. If its home made that's fine. It its purchased that's OK too. During the year I've already bought all the things that I desperately needed and if I really wanted something I bought that too. For christmas I love to get the things that someone discovered that I never knew were out there but I will love to have. Great books, good art, special CDs, fun gadgets, Bissingers chocolate, beautiful jewelry, gift certificates to new restaurants etc.

The best gift I can give my family and America is by spreading the word about Ron Paul and donating any money to his campaign!
That is the best gift any true American can give!

oh i have had a history of making all my presents. from collages to curtains. i think it means a lot more if it is homemade.. plus I'm unbelievable cheap and i cant see spending hundreds of dollars when i can make something that means so much more. best of luck to you..
