The hemophilia gene is on the X chromosome. The man got his X chromosome from his mother. He can pass the X chromosome with the hemophilia gene only to his daughters. Most women who have the hemophilia gene are only carriers. Only when both X chromosomes carry the gene, the woman can have the disease.
