Well, as you found out, libraries are free or at little cost (generally the cost of the card) to the public. Government centers are at times open to the public, so if you wanted to go meet with a legislator all you'd need to do is make an appointment.

Um, one thing that I have found good is that unless they're really jerks, most hospitals will deal with emergencies, even if you don't have insurance. It would need to be a big emergency though.

Learn what you can about the governmental system here so that if you ever get caught up in it you'll have a better understanding.

We have a minimum wage of I believe 5.85 per hour. If you have the legal right to work in America, most jobs are required to pay this much. I may be wrong, but I think if you work in a job where you earn tips it's 2.13 an hour. The wage can be higher depending upon what state you live in, too.

Just keep asking around. Good luck!

Well, a few hints.

First, as an alien, ANY "crime of moral turpitude", which means a crime involving dishonesty, such as shoplifting, fraud, deliberately passing a bad check, etc is grounds for immediate deportation and permanent exclusion - so keep your nose clean!

Second, take your free library card and check out a couple of books on civil rights. See what you can and can't do if stopped by the police.

Third, if you want to work on your own rather than having a paid job, remember that in the US - far more than in most European countries - you need government permission in the form of a license or permit to do almost anything. Want to fix cars? Get a license from the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Want to manicure peoples nails? Get a license from the Board of Cosmetology. Want to put up fences? Get a contractors license.

Americans tolerate a level of government intrusion into their daily lives that other people would never put up with, so you'll have to get used to that different mindset.

Find out if the city or town you live in has public transportation. Very handy for learning your way around, especially if you are nervous about driving in a new area.
