There are also Brackishwater fish these are very interesting fish and require more work than a freshwater aquarium, some of the fish within this group are:
Mono

Tetras, corydora catfish, rainbowfish, platies, swordtails, and guppies are some examples of freshwater fish. Also, saltwater fish are VERY expensive. For example: you can go to most pet stores and get a 5 inch gourami for about 5 dollars. Well, a 5 inch sea wrasse might be well around 64 dollars. Definitely a big difference . . .

Freshwater species:

Also, most native fish other than those that live in estuaries and bays (where saltwater mixes with freshwater) will be freshwater.

The price of saltwater fish will vary greatly depending on size, where you live, and whether or not they are captive bred or wild caught (including those labelled as "tank raised", since they were removed from the ocean at some point in their life - "tank raised" only means they have been in captivity for at least a year).

Here are some links where you can get an idea on the prices of SW fish:

Some things to keep in mind about buying saltwater fish is that if you buy online, the initial cost may seem lower, but there's usually a shipping cost as well. Part of the shipping will include the weight of the water to ship the fish - consider both when comparing the price to what you might see in stores. Also, buying from a store may be preferable, since this is they only way you can tell the size/age, sometimes gender, and health of the fish you buy. If you buy online, look for a company (such as those I've listed) that provide an "arrive alive" guarantee.

Saltwater fish are beautiful, but expensive & the upkeep & expense of a saltwater tank is MUCH more than a freshwater aquarium.
As for some freshwater fish: Angelfish are lovely. Zebra fish, tiger barbs, neon fish, guppies, and oh-so-many more! Just browse around a local pet shop to see which are your favorites.

There are 100s of kinds of freshwater fish. Instead of trying to list all of them, let me give you this link that describes many, many of them and also includes an average price. Saltwater fish are, on the average, anywhere from $20 to $500. This, in conjunction with the advanced water, filtering and inhabitants requirements is why saltwater fishkeeping is not for beginners.

ADD are we? Any fish at Wal-mart is a freshwater, except for the Green Spotted Puffer, it's a brackish water *salt and fresh*. On the whole, salt water fish are about 5 times more then freshwater and some are thousands....and the maintenance of a salt tank is expensive and timely. You have to love it to do it.

Freshwater fish are the standard. You'll generally find them more common in your standard Pet store, as opposed to a "FISH" store. Goldfish, Rosie Barbs, and Platys are freshwater.

Saltwater fish are going to be significantly more expensive. If you are new to fish keeping, just do freshwater.
