Teaching a child to be both assertive and humble is a two-part lesson. The child needs to know they are valuable and have much to offer. The child also needs to learn to respect the people around them, and the beauty of using their gifts to serve the needs of others who are less fortunate.
Every child needs love most of all. In a loving home, a child can learn the importance of standing up for their beliefs and what they know is right. With warm praise, parents instill a sense of pride and self-worth in their children. It is very important to highlight your child's strengths and special talents with the right amount of praise and positive critique.
Self-confidence and a sense of worth helps a child to stand strong against bullies and other children who would influence them to make the wrong decisions. When a confident child, who has been taught right from wrong, is faced with peer-pressure, they more easily follow the moral lessons they've learned and make positive decisions. In this case, a loving home leads to a happy, assertive child confident in their beliefs.
It is this same loving home that will teach the importance of humble acts. Parents teach their children to care for those who are less fortunate. It is important to teach a child their actions speak louder than words. Parents need to lead by example and never overly boast or brag about their own accomplishments. When you land that big promotion, come home and tell your child that you were promoted, explain how you worked hard and you are happy to know your actions have been noticed. Your child will see this simple and humble act and will take it to heart, modeling themselves after your own actions.
An important lesson for children today is never be overly confident that you are the best at anything. Yes, you may be very gifted, but the world is vast and full of people with the same gifts and talents. Teaching your child of various cultures and beliefs throughout the world will help a child to understand that there is no "best" - there are so many different ways to achieve the same goal. Our multi-faceted heritage is what makes the human race so very special.
When a child learns they are a valuable, special and treasured part of the human race, they learn to be strong and assertive in themselves and humble in the knowledge they are part of a greater good.

By example. Be humble yourself and point out arrogant adults to the child as bad examples that you can both laugh about.

Be humble yourself. Being an example, no matter of what, is a good way to sculpt a child's beliefs.

I will go alonjg with the general consensus here and agree with the concept of teaching by example. If you want to teach someone to be humble then YOU must be humble yourself. (((((((Rae)))))))

Children who are having problems with humility are looking for attention. I would guess that rarely do they get praise for their efforts and are trying to get a pat on the back. When you catch them doing something good, praise them before they boast.
Model humility.
Have them read stories about knights and chivalry. One of the virtues of chivalry is humility.

That is tough to teach a kid...but life does a good job of getting lessons as they go thru life...as boys anyway, the first time you get your *** kicked it takes off a layer of bravdo.
