1] Ankle socks - for working out, or with shorts - worn with athletic shoes only
2] over the calf - for dress pants, by both men and women, so you don't 'flash' calf [ also warmer in winter ]
3] trouser socks - are over the calf, or should be
4] sockless - with sandals, mocassins, some ballet flats, loafers. Not with dress shoes unless feet are perfectly manicured.

It depends what I'm wearing.
-Pants: Prolly regular socks
-Shorts: Ankle socks (I think it's illegal in 48 states to wear long socks with shorts)
-Sandals: Im not asian so i go sockless with my sandals.

ankle socks in the summer or halfway up the calf in the winter...my legs get cold.
