Imagine that all the iPods are like a family, and that you are a 5th generation (the video) iPod. The 1rst generation, the very first iPod, would be your great-great grandma. The 2nd generation would be your great-grandma. The 3rd generation would be your grandma. The 4th generation would be your mom. And you are the 5th. Get it?

But the differences between the 2nd generation Nano and the 3rd generation Nano are simple. The 2nd gen is much smaller in size and doesn't play videos, while the 3rd gen has a larger screen and DOES play videos (and a few games).

Depends on what you'll use it for, but I recommend the 3rd gen. Good luck anyway! =]

Apple Inc. recently released it's 3rd Gen. iPod nano. It's shorter and wider than the previous generation and it plays video. The 2nd Gen. Nano was the same size as the 1st Generation, but it went back to the idea of the iPod Mini with alluminum casing and different colors. This one came in 2, 4 or 8 GB models and it didn't play videos. The new generation also has the alluminum cases and comes in differnt colors as well and it comes in 8 and 16 GB models.
