I never ever give them money - you are NOT supposed to do that. I DO however offer to buy them a sandwich or coffee if they'd like - they almost always turn that down. The city officials tell us we should give the money to support the shelters so they can have more places to stay rather than give them cash to support bad habits that may have contributed to putting them on the street - OR- give them coupons for food places so they can get something to EAT. (never cash)

I've done both. I live in a big city so you see the homeless almost everyday. I don't give money for karma or some spiritual reward I just do it to be a nice person.

I believe in karma. And I'll give money/help or not based on my assessment of the situation. Some of those people who are asking for money aren't as poor as you might believe.

I gave a poor homeless guy (who I saw around the neighborhood and he never begged, loitered, or drank) 20 dollars. It was the right thing to do at the time. I surely didn't need another pair of shoes.

If I have some change I will pass some on to the less fortunate. Often times I don't have change and I truly hope that these folk believe me when I say sorry.
