hi there i have japaneese acers they are very sensitive .if you have them in a pot or garden make sure they are not in direct sunlight and have free draining soil .they do die down in winter .look at the branches and bend them if its dead it will break off .dont worry this is normal take all the dead wood off .give it some mulch to protect against the winter and it will come back the year .i hope thats ok

Yep, all that's right about acers - dieing back for the winter, liking acid soil etc, but one more very important point. Acers don't like strong winds, so if its still in a pot then tuck it into a sheltered spot for the winter. If its in the ground then try to offer it some protection eg fleecy stuff.

Acer Palmatums, Japanese Maples whatever you wish to call them lose there leaves in the fall and come back in the spring. This tree needs to be outside, it will dry out inside and dye, unless you are living in an extremely humid house in which case your walls are probablly moldy!
Cheers!

My neighbor has one of these and the first time I saw it was in fall after all the leaves had fallen off. I thought it was completely dead and wondered why he kept it in the ground. Then, in spring, it came back to life with a full crown of leaves.

Acers are deciduous - which means they drop their leaves in the Autumn. It should start showing signs of life in the early spring.

Acers hate alkaline soil, you need to get a soil tester or repot it with ericaceous soil. If the stems bend without breaking , it should be ok.

Yeah they can look bad in the winter and can die in hard frosts the green leaf variety will survive the frosts more than the purple leaf variety. Leave it until spring it should survive.
