Thanks for all your help, but I'm not quite stupid enough to leave a lemon or lime in there long enough to rot?!!
I just thought maybe I could use the juices somehow!!

Get Arm & Hammer baking soda. They have fridge (and freezer) packs that are made just for this purpose (one of the panels is perforated). There is even room to write a date (three months from now) of when to replace it. Good luck!

I don't know if anyone else came up with this, but use an open box of baking soda. (sarcasm intended)
Do not use lemons or limes. They will rot eventually and they smell really bad when they do. Then you'll be back on Yahoo Answers asking how to remove the smell of rotten lemons and limes from your fridge.

Baking Soda is best
a small amount of activated charcoal helps sometime
the lemons and limes aren't going to give off much aromatic ( nice smelling, in this case) oils in the cold.
But you could try a drop or 2 of lemon or orange flavoring
if those are the scents you like.

First of all, make sure the fridge is clean. Mop up an spills and toss out any dead food. If you are thawing out frozen food, place the food on a plate lined with a paper towel to avoid/soak up any leaks With that said, open up a box of baking soda and place it in the fridge with today's date written on the box. Swap out the box every three months. Put one in the freezer, too.

Using natural fruit will only mask the smells. They will also rot in the frig but a box of Baking Soda, that you open up can absorb odors for a month. It is inexpensive as well.

I'll use leftover bread as in plain sandwich bread.
Cut bread into small cubes and air dry for a few days. A faster way will be baking them in the oven for 5 - 10 minutes.
Put bread into containers and leave it in the fridge. Works as good as commercial products.

Slice the lemon in half and put it in the fridge, the lemon will absorb all the nasty smells and just leave you with a lovely smell.
