how do you read a burette? from top to bottom or backwards?

Top-to-bottom. You fill the burette to, say, the 100-mL mark with standard solution, let out standard solution until the end point, then read the lesser number part-way down.

Also, you read both top and part-way numbers at the bottom of the meniscus of the solution.

by backwards you mean beacuase the graduations start from the top and go down. so backwards i guess you mean.
