Monitors - What is better for the eyes, dark background and bright text or bright background and dark text?

The application is a terminal screen. you can adjust the colors of the background and text separately and i do spend a lot of time staring at it :).
The main question is what's healthier / easiest on the eyes.

The highest contrast is yellow text on a dark blue background.

Avoid black backgrounds, other than that it is really personal preference. A lot of people like black text on a white background because it closest to a printed page.

It's really going to depend on what application you're running. I don't know of any monitors that you can just adjust the text and background separately, and different programs have different text/background colors. If you're just talking about your desktop background and desktop fonts, you're not going to spend most of your time staring at those, so it won't really matter.

dark background and light text....
the reverse might look cool but it is hard on the eyes and causes more wear on the monitor,...
