Is there a close beach or something to if I have 5 or so hours before my flight? What are my options for transportation?

We flew into Fort Myers in Oct. all I can say is watch out for those security lines. 5 hours seems like a lot of time but it took us like an hour to get through security so you really only have like 4 hours. There really is not a beach that close, you could take a cab to the beach, and I have no idea how much that would cost. There are a few interesting places near town that you could take a cab to, try out the Aquarium, the Edison and Ford Estates, or the Southwest FL Museum of History. All of them are wonderful and very interesting.
If you had a little more time and a car I would totally suggest checking out Sanibel Island! AWESOME we go to this wonderful little island each Oct and have been for years. The white beaches are breathtaking and it really has that small island laid back feel. They also have the best shelling in the world! There is a lot to see on Sanibel and some really good shopping and restaurants. If you decide to rent a car take the time and go there you will not regret it!
Oh yeah there is a wonderful outlet mall in Fort Myers the only bad thing is that if you shop you will have to get the stuff through security or check it in. However you can find some great deals here! They have everything. Well good luck for the most part the airport is very easy to work with, one of the better ones that I have been in. no close beach, why don't rent a car for $30 and drive along 865, bay, captiva, bokeelia.. you have plenty of time.
