I was just posting an answer to a guy in Malaysia, who asked about split personalities.
I think it is humour, you allow your everyday personality off the leash and become a Yacomedian for a few hours, whether it is a Sci Fi character, a Fyre Angel, or a crab that comes out from under a rock for a few hours.

I would have to say, that it's a combination of a few things.
First on the list would be the infinite knowledge they possess.
Second the common interest in certain criteria.
Third (but by no means last), the kind of commradery , friendship,and willingness to help that they offer.

I think it is a relationship issue. We come together here for some fun and answers, and it doesn't matter where in the world you are. The concepts of humour vary but it is quickly picked up by others.
Having a split personality is a necessity,
not a hindrance.
