I think this is a good question. We don't have any American rituals that allow a boy to know when he has become a man. Many cultures have such rituals. There is a book called "Iron John" by Kurt A. Johnson that speaks to this issue.

Try to find out what is Good and do what you can to attain it.

Well, physiologically, one is born a man--a male, at least.

A better man can be developed through good parenting, education and socialization. Positive role models are helpful as well.

When he distinguishes himself from animals,
then he becomes a human.

When he realises that he is the highest of all
creation, then he becomes a human.

When he develops his intellect,
then he becomes a human.

When he becomes an example for others,
then he becomes a human.

When he transcends the common limitations
through his wisdom, then he becomes best of humans.
