My computer has been shutting down.
Sometimes I can be in the middle of checking email or typing a paper and the screen just goes black and the system shuts down.
I am a college student and I really need my computer.
Nothing pops up on the screen before this occurs, the screen just goes black and the computer shuts off.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with it?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

After the computer has been off for a while, find the fan outlet (usually on the bottom or side/rear). See if there is any dust or dirt built up inside. Turn the laptop on and see if air is coming out or if you can hear the fan. If not, get a can of compressed air and try blowing out the port where the fan is. Most times when a laptop randomly shuts off its due to overheating. If cleaning out the fan ducts doesn't fix the problem and the fan doesn't appear to be moving air, the fan may need to be replaced. Any competent computer repair shop should be able to fix it for less that $50 plus parts.

If the fan is working, try to run the laptop without the battery in it (using just the AC adapter). A battery with a bad cell can also cause the machine to randomly shut down.

Hope this helps.

Most common cause is overheating. Check that you have good airflow around the entire laptop (nothing within 2 inches of either side or back - and not setting on something soft like a bed or lap that can block the bottom. Make sure any air vent holes are not blocked with dust or dirt (blow them out with compressed air).

Sounds like your running on battery and the battery is low, it will shut down, if its plugged in an does that it may be overheating, keep the bottom raised to allow air flow, also run a full disk check with both boxes checked , this will repair or detect any hard drive issues, also download and install this it will allow your laptop to update any hardware issues it may have http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R96945&SystemID=INS_CEL_1000&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=3601&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=7&fileid=125723
