for example, i had this.

121.6.124.30 and 121.6.84.3

and from the website, http://www.ipgp.net/ i found out that both stays in singapore and from city queenstown.

however, i could confirm that one of tht is my friend and is not staying at queenstown. so, what does the first few digit of the ip address means? and does having the first few digits the same means that they are staying in the same area?

depending on your type of network, the first two (121.6) are the numbers for the network your are on. The second two are the numbers for your computer. So having the same first two numbers mean you have the same internet service provider.

If you are want to know about IP addresses, there is a great article from the website Bleeping Computers which explains them.

It does not necessarily mean they are staying in the same area. It does mean that they are most likely on the same network, looks like a class B netwrok. But location doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it - it is more of a logical distinction than a physical one.

having the first numbers the same means the are connecting through the same router but has nothing to do with where you are connecting from. I can access my ISP from any where in the US and the first part of by number would be the same.
