I always wanted to go, but I was always "too little" to go and then when I got old enough we lived in Tennessee...Not much ice fishing here. The cold weather made me think of it.....I will bet several of my North Country Contacts have been.
Peace.

Hello GEM, you bet! When you come up north in the winter, I will take you ice fishing.(if the lake is frozen). There have been several years that were so warm that the ice didn't form thickly enough for safe fishing. You could almost go out in a boat:) I used to go in my younger days, but didn't catch much except a cold. Peace be with you.

I am also looking for a sonar unit right now. I have been reading a lot of forums and reviews. Go with a Marcum LX-1. Gonna be around $299 new, I'm guessing you can find one used for around your limit. They are superior to Vexilar, check out some reviews online. I have been researching flashers for a couple of weeks and after what I have read, I can tell you Marcum is the only way to go... Humminbirds suck, and Vexilars are way overpriced for the features. To get the features of the entry level Marcum, you will pay a couple hundred more for a Vex.

Every winter, a group of us were getting our gear ready yesterday. We catch fish just about every time we go out. And yes we drive our vehicles on the ice after it's thick enough.

Yes.
The one and ONLY time i went ice fishing we caught over 120 pounds of ice, but it melted in the trunk on the way home and I was never able to get the mildew smell out of the car since, so I've never done it again.

Never been - but it did remind me of a joke one of my fifth grade students told in class once. "How do you catch fish when ice fishing? Open a can of peas and place them around the hole. Then when the fish comes up to "take a pea" - you whack it in the head." Hey - they are 10 year olds - what do you expect! : - )

I've never really lived or visited anywhere cold enough to go ice fishing. It might be fun to go though.

ice fishing is prettty cool. You do catch fish but you have to be set up with alot of stuff first,or know someone who is. If you like to fish its something to exsperience. early bird always catches the worm when it comes to ice fishing. you have to get em' while their yawning. good luck
