Well, that is still the subject of much debate.
One prevailing theory is handedness is a learned trait and since the world mostly caters to right-handedness that is the predominant handedness, this often called the sword and shield argument.
Some researches claim to have identified a gene that would indicate a more probable result of left-handedness but still much less than right handedness even with the gene present.
Still other researchers claim that the right hemisphere of the brain controls motor function and therefore leads to more left-handed people, but don't explain why people are left handed.
The latest data on handedness shows that the number of left handed people are actual increasing as a percent of total population, now that prevailing wisdom is not to repress or change people with a tendency of left handedness.
I'm left handed, even after having my wrist fractured by a rather mean teacher in my formative years for writing with my left hand. By the way she never taught again. Where it comes from is a mystery, I'm the only known member of my family on either side to favor my left-hand for several generations.
I do however exhibit a tendency to show greater dexterity with my right hand than most right handers would show with their left hand due to the need to function and adapt to a world designed mainly by and for right handed people. In truth today, I only favor my left hand when writing.

Hi. Having just enjoyed the World Series I can say that being right handed or left handed is not a handicap. And I do not understand how anyone can be comfortable from both the right handed and left handed batters position.
