I'm curious if anyone knows if your water breaks as the first sign of labor before any contractions with your first child, is it any different or the same with the second? I know this is supposed to be rare but it happened with my older daughter and I'm wondering if that makes it more likely with my current pregnancy or if it wouldn't make a difference and I have the same chance as anyone (I think only 20%) of having that happen. Please only answer if you actually know or can direct me to a site or article that would tell me. Thank you!

I broke my first baby's water punk dancing to my husbands band (seriously). Baby followed next day. Second baby started as light contraction and the water breaking didn't happen until things were really rocking and rolling.

Every pregnency is different. Check WebMD! That's ususally the most reliable source of info on the internet.

With my first, my water broke at 38 weeks and contractions still hadn't started 24 hours later, so I had to have pitocin augmentation. I have Group B Strep, so ruptured water means antibiotics and sooner delivery, rather than later.

With my second, I got contractions at 40 weeks plus 4 days as my first sign of labor. My water didn't break until the first push.

With my third, my water broke at 37 weeks and I didn't have contractions at all, so they started me on pitocin 12 hours into it.

I do think some people have a tendency to have water breaking early without contractions, but in my case, it was only 2 out of 3 times.

Don't worry about the measurements, my baby measured small all through my pregnancy and she was fine, but she's still small at 20 months! I delivered almost 3 weeks early with my first. The week before I started feeling really nauseous and had bad back pains. The back pain progressed through the week, which I later found out were contractions!! I also had some bleeding a few days before. The night before I went into full-blown labour, I was up every half hour all night long to pee! Made for a very long day at work the next day. But I worked all that day in labour (hindsight is 20/20), and full-blown labour started at about 9pm. My daughter was born the next morning! So, yes I knew it was coming soon but didn't know how soon!

My turn.
First - labor and water broke about 3 hours after the pain started. 12 hours labor
Second - third time in labor (2 false) and they broke the water. 6 hours labor
Third (last child) - water broke 2 hours before contractions could be felt. 3 hours labor (1 hour pain)
Needless to say, the last one was scary since I really didn't think I was going to make to the hospital in time, but I did.

My water broke with my second child. I wasn't feeling contractions but when I went to the hospital I was steadily contracting. They got painful after a couple hours. I just wanted to point out that you may not realize you're contracting.

My water broke as a 1st sign of labor with my second child.

I cant really answer your question, but I fully expect that to happen again. I'm a little scared too, that labor went so fast i'll probibly have my next on the living room floor!!!

I was the opposite. First kid-my water didn't break. Second-my water broke. On my 3rd and I guess it could go either way. I hope it doesn't b/c that is a pain in the ***. I don't think it's a genetic thing so I don't think the chances are higher or lower.

With my first child ( a boy) my water broke and he was born 4 hours later. With second and third kids ( both girls) they had to break my water at the hospital because I was already dialated past a 4. They were both born within a couple of hours of that.
Congrats and good luck!

I had a few braxton hicks, decided I was going to poop constipation or not. It caused my water to break and my labor started from that point on.

I think its different with every women. Labor is supposed to start before your water breaks, but it breaking really helps move it along thats why some doctors strip your membranes or break your water to get things going.

Each pregnancy is different.

It isn't usually something that can be predicted. Mine broke with my son, they thought he might have got it with his fingernail or something, but I think it happens more like 15% of the time. Mine broke before any contractions started, but I'm sure it's different for everyone. Good luck! =)
