Well you have it half right.
I too would worry about the cost of any democrat proposal.
Regarding the privacy concern and Republicans.
It goes like this. Repubicans are not interested in removing your rights to privacy or any freedoms that you have. Republicans put security first realizing that this is paramount in preserving society. Where the media misleads you is to have you think that Republicans are looking for a PERMANENT solution to reducing your privacy and personal freedoms. Where in fact the perception that you are loosing your freedoms are manufactured by the media. My grandfather told me about growing up as a child during WWII in Texas. Gas rationing, food rationing on certain items, having to hang blackout curtains in the house, police with shoot-to-kill orders in the oil fields - the list goes on. It was all about sacrifice. It was a TEMPORARY condition.
The issues we face today - however perceived are also TEMPORARY until such time we can get ahead of the game in the intellegence gathering field.

Not sure how you think the Republicans aren't going to "cost" you too with their trillion dollar Iraq war and trillion dollar tax cuts. You think you're making more money because of tax cuts under the GOP? Those cuts are being funded by BORROWING from other countries and increasing the national debt and they will have to be paid back with interest by your children and grandchildren. You're going to pay through the nose later for the tax benefits you're reaping now. So with the Repubs, its a double edged sword, you lose both your freedoms AND money.

That's because where the money should come from is not being researched. For instance national health care puts the fear of God in conservatives. Yet all of Europe and the far East Japan and China, Canada, even Cuba have it. So you wonder how much will my taxes go up. Let's look at the facts. The fact is that the company you work for pays for the bulk of your insurance plan. You pay for the rest. Sometimes it's a good plan most of the time it gets worse every year and cost more. The money they pay out is considered in the cost of wages paid out. The company then takes a tax brake for providing insurance. So who makes up the taxes they don't pay? You do! Because you are just a person with no lobby or political clout. Now that means, no matter what; you are already paying for health care in your wages and taxes and directly.
The next thing they scare you with is that the government will decide what care you get not the doctors. Doctors are being paid by HMO's not to treat you. They get bonuses on that. So who has your health care in their hands? Insurance companies who by law must answer to their stock holders first even if it means you get to die from cancer instead of getting a bone marrow transplant. You won't be getting an MRI like TV shows love to bandy out every other word. Getting an MRI takes an act of GOD.
So now Health care is paid by you and you won't be getting the care you should have. This is the Republican plan.
I dare to say the Democrats don't seem to have a good plan either. John Edwards and Dennis Kusinich are the only ones with a plan. Hilary's plan is a joke. I haven't hear Obama say anything.
Now if health care was removed from the backs of business they could pay a more competitive wage. They could bring prices in lower and compete in a world market where all the other competitors have national health care. So their business is not required to deal with this. The tax brake would not be needed.
Instead you tax the things that kill people like fire arms a big factor in the deaths of inner city dwellers including police. You tax tobacco and alcohol, You also take fossil fuels that pollute the environment.
The savings on business would stimulate the economy. The tax payer would pay much less for his health care since he is paying it in full now.
The problem with both parties is they don't look at the solution. They look at the problem and begin providing sound bites for the media.
The Media is driven to entertain stupid people ; so they can sell their sponsors stuff, on the air.
If you want change you have to make it happen. You have to be willing to realize it will make a huge difference.
The Pharmaceutical and insurance companies don't want change. They want to go on making huge profits at your expense.
The Republicans have a platform based on fear. We fight them there so we don't have to fight them hear. Bull*hit.
We are in the wrong country fighting a war for no reason based on known lies. This is going to cost you more then health care.three trillion dollars! All of it borrowed and owed with interest to China and other nations who have national health care.
Health care won't cost anywhere near 20 billion if at all if done right. But if you always vote in fear then you get what you fear. Any one who has ridden a bike knows if you look where you don't want to go you will go there. If you are on a bike and you see a pot hole and keep looking at it you will hit it. Look where you want to go and you will go there.
If you always vote in fear of what may happen then you will loose all your freedoms. Never act out of fear but never fear to act!

This perception about Democrats spending wildly is from the dark ages. Review the Clinton Administration's record of "pay as you go" and balanced budgets, and Bush and the Republican congress' (at least through '06) record of wild reckless unprecedented spending. Any slightly objective person shouldn't have any questions about which partly is more fiscally responsible.

Your words:
And then I wonder how many freedoms and how much privacy I am going to lose when I hear of "that" plan from a Republican?
And the 'monetary cost' of 'that' plan?
Do you think the Iraqi fiasco is free?
And what about the 'cost' in human lives?

I guess losing my freedom to contact the middle east unmonitored is not really that big of a deal to me. I however do not want to pay taxes for health care that is not as good as what I have and is available to people not paying taxes at all.

Take another look. Republicans cost you more than just your freedoms. Who do you think is going to pay for their occupation of Iraq? The people of New Orleans already have paid. You may be next.
