The asked for references not referees. If he confused the two then he did not deserve the job. If he was unable to list two people that knew him well enough to say something good about him he also does not deserve the job. Yes it was fair.

Is this a joke? You're kidding, right? You said he can't give two REFEREES because he's not a SPORTING person. If it's not a joke, man, ya need to go back to school.

Dan B - is this a new term that I'm not familiar with? A "referee in employment terms" -- or is it that people are just getting this wrong, and it's SUPPOSED to be REFERENCES?

if you are actually meaning referees then no this was not fair at all and people should not have to know about stuff that is not relevant to the job they are applying to

but if you are talking about references then yes it was fair because the company is just asking for 2 people that know him that can say that he is a good person, good worker etc

A referee in employment terms is a person who knows about your personality/skills and has known you usually for 18 months or more and is not related to you in any way.

2 referees ! are you as dumb as he seems to be ? No wonder they did not want to hire him. I cannot believe someone or 2 in this case could be so ignorant. You need to examine yourself..

Referees?

I think you mean "References" which is completely different.

Being unable to provide someone to give information about your past work history is certainly a fair reason to not hire someone.
