In many object-oriented programming languages, this (or self) is a keyword which can be used in instance methods to refer to the object on which the currently executing method has been invoked. C++, and programming languages which derive from it (such as Java and C#) generally use the keyword this, whereas Smalltalk and its progeny, as well as Python prefer the keyword self. The Self programming language is named after this use of "self".

"This" means

Used to refer to the person or thing present, nearby, or just mentioned: This is my cat. These are my tools.
Used to refer to what is about to be said: Now don't laugh when you hear this.
Used to refer to the present event, action, or time: said he'd be back before this.
Used to indicate the nearer or the more immediate one: This is mine and that is yours.

"this" is an indicative pronoun representing an object close at hand, as opposed to "that" representing an object far away.
