Within the boundaries of the current United States, there used to be:
Repuiblic of Texas

Republic of Louisiana
The Confederate States of America
and, for less than a month,
The Republic of California.
Throughout world history there have been many others, including Carthage, the Roman Empire, and Mayan city states.

OK two things to you people trying to sound smart about the Arab Israeli conflict... Palestine was a FRENCH colony and never belonged to the British to give away at all!! And, remember the Philistines, from Bible class? Anyone else find it ironic that the Arabic word for Palestinian is Philistini? No. They were there first. And there are Jews and Christians among the Palestinians who are suffering under Israeli occupation. According to UN Resolutions, Israel is illegally occupying and developing on land that is not their own. Israel is also a known violator of the Geneva convention.

Look, I am not going to enter into a long winded debate with you. I have been involved in enough public debates without having these kind too.

Read Palestine and the Arab-Israeli Conflict: A History with Documents, by Charles Smith. Or you can just watch Occupation 101 if you have a problem with getting down to nitty gritty details in textbook format.

And I took a year of Arabic. Philistini means Palestinian in Arabic. Ever heard of Irgun? Deir Yassin? Mecca Accords? I am not saying there should be no Israel, just that they should not occupy Palestinian territory or subject its people to military occupation.

Under the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the region around Haifa was under direct French control and the regions now containing Gaza and Jerusalem were to be held under international jusridiction pending further discussions with Russia. The British disregarded this agreement with the Balfour Declaration. British had no direct spheres of influence in the region at the time. If you want to debate someone, schedule an event and do it right. I hate doing this sort of stuff because it becomes consuming and is fruitless. I will not post another response to you. Happy Hunting.

Being a passionate, articulate supporter of something you believe in is great...but being a fascist extremist isn't.

You are NOT here seeking knowledge on fallen civilizations and/or the science of cartography...you ARE only using this question as a vehicle to advance your uninformed, xenophobic, Anti-Israeli propaganda!!

I've seen your questions before...you point your little accusatory finger...and bait others w/ incendiary hate-rhetoric and then try and act all offended and moralistically high-minded when other posters respond in a like manner.

To paraphrase George Santayana....Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to looking idiotic when they constantly misquote it...and/or don't own a map!

Go buy a pre-1947 map of the world...and a good history textbook...now try directing all that hate and anger into something productive...like learning to think for yourself instead of simply regurgitating the same old Pro-Arab revisionist history you were taught.

Then maybe you can come back and ask questions w/o sounding quite so uneducated.

*Edit*
Sailacel, it takes a certain...'special'... kind of person to defend another person's hateful religious/political prejudices by volunteering to display their own. If you're going to verbally chastise and try and "correct" others...you really should research things a bit more thoroughly...and proof before you post. Also, if you advocating a position that falls outside of generally accepted historical 'facts'...you really need to quote a source. Otherwise you'll end up looking as silly as a Holocaust denier!!

So, please quote an objective (see also: non-militant, non-extremist) source that corroborates your claim that the French and not the British controlled "Palestine". I couldn't even find even a Pro-Arab website that denied England's involvement and control?? You're probably confusing France's mandate in (what is now) Syria...w/ the Brits Mandate in Palestine. Are you familiar w/ the Sykes-Picot Agreement? The Balfour Declaration of 1917? The Battle of Megiddo in 1918? Why hasn't your "Middle Eastern History" studies covered this information? Perhaps there's a hidden agenda at work...behind the scenes at your school?

Also ....you should look up The British Mandate by the League of Nations...important stuff that a history major should have. Maybe that's in the next chapter of your history book...or coming next semester? LOL

Since you want to make sure everyone is getting accurate information...perhaps you should review the causes and ramifications (w/ relation to Palestine) of the Arab Revolt of the late 30's...or examine the findings of the Peel Commission and the Woodhead Commission?

As for..."Palestinian is Philistini"....while your 'text' translation is accurate...the 'context' of your statement indicates you lack any real acumen concerning the early Philistines. The "Philistines" of that period were NOT Arabs (or Jews)...they were nomadic peoples from Greece and Asia Minor!

Shouldn't we actually understand and openly discuss all of the settlements, civilizations, religions and nationalities that have called this same geographic region home since the Paleolithic period...before we resort to relying on a horribly simplistic philosophy like, "they were there first"!! History has shown us that is no way to discern a workable solution in these situations.

Or, should Israel follow your instruction and give their territory back to the Greeks...since, they were there first"??

Regardless of what you claim to be studying...promulgating dogmatic propaganda doesn't make you a historian...it makes you a propagandist...and on this issue, an extremist.

Again...try directing all that hate and anger into something productive...like learning to think for yourself instead of simply regurgitating the same old Pro-Arab revisionist history you've been taught.

Considering there was never an actual independent state called Palestine, then it was never wiped off the map, either "as we speak" or ever.

If you are referring to the British colony that was called Palestine and subsequent history that resulted in a Jewish state but no Arab state alongside it, well, it was the Arabs who rejected that plan. According to that logic, we can argue that it was really the Arabs who "wiped Palestine off the map" if by "wiped off the map" we mean "caused not to come into existence".

Heruli, Ostrogoths, and the vandals were all countries/ territories which were wiped off the map by the Roman Catholic church during the dark ages. They refused to conform to Catholic rule and were eradicated. At that time there were 7 other countries/territories which are still around today but with other names. They are:

Alemani (Germans)
Anglo-Saxons (English)
Bergundians (Swiss)
Lombards (Italians)
Suevi (Portuguese)
Francs (French)
Visigoths (Spanish)

Taiwan. (but not yet; hopefully will never be "wiped of the map"):

The People's Republic of China, with most of the world's backing, is in the process of attempting to annex the sovereign democratic Taiwan republic, which was never part of China.
