this probably might not help you, but last christmas my dad got my sister and i mp3 players, sounds materialistic but i wanted to cry, it was actually a really good gift that i didn't even ask for, the fact that my dad wanted to get us something special just kind of touched my heart, i don't know what it was, but it came from him and thinking we would like it, and he worked so hard helping us to get music onto it, it almost bonded us a bit...

On my birthday in 1997, my family made me a very nice dinner with lasagna and caesar salad. My whole family was there including my grandparents and aunts and uncles.
We ate and talked and shared funny stories. Just having the time spent with them and the memories was the best gift I ever got because less than a month later, my younger sister died and then five months later my uncle died. Then the year after that, my grandfather died.
Now, I don't really like big extravagant parties. I try to be low key and just end up going to the movies with my mom. I believe that time is the most valuable gift we can give.

The best gift I ever recieved was a neclace from my son, he had saed all his money up to get it for me for christmas one year. I had no idea what he was doing.
And the best gift I think I ever gave would have to be when I got my mom a mothers ring and included in it that stone of the baby she lost at birth.

My best friend from a couple state's away showed up unexpectantly on a holiday weekend.
My mom's happiest gift was using my cell phone and was able to visit to her favorite couisins instead of only letters.
Something that came from the heart. My son took painstaking care on a picture he made me. Also, I gave him a simple chore for money & he found me stuff from a rummage sale that HE bought.
* * Pictures on your picture site and put them into a slide show with music and captions. Make several copies for gifts.

Hands down, I got the best gift ever...it was more the thought than the actual gift. For my birthday, my then friend now husband told me he was cooking a formal meal at his home for me. He instructed me to get dressed up and he would pick me up after work. He stayed about an hour from me and on the way to his house he got a telephone call from his roommate. He told me his roommate had some leads for us (we both worked at loan officers) and he wanted us to stop by this restaurant in Midtown. He gets there and pays for parking and I'm fussing and complaining. I told him my feet hurt so he should just go inside for the both of us. He went in and came back and told me that his roommate actually had the prospects there with him and they wanted to meet me. So we go inside and everyone was being extra nice to me. My future husband had to run out to the car so I went to the bathroom...where I was escorted to and they dried my hands after. I was thinking this is so weird. One of the waiters takes us to the back and my future husband rented out the VIP section of the restaurant for the evening. It was soooooooo nice. There was a tv, nice lighting, it was roped and curtained off for privacy and there was satellite radio. The food was amazing AND this was a restaurant I had been wanting to go to for like six months. He even talked them into singing me happy birthday (which they said they don't do) and I got this huge gourmet ice cream creation sitting on top of dry ice...it was VERY cool.
From there, he took me to his house and there were rose petals covering the entire floor and there were candles (his roommate had actually been home the entire time and my future husband secretly called him before we got to the house to set everything up). He had balloons and some of the best champagne I ever had chilling alongside strawberries and chocolates. It was amazing. The gift he gave me was the Inspiration to go with The Purpose Driven Life book which I had borrowed from him. He also gave me two cards and then dropped on one knee and recited this poem he wrote for me...it was pretty hot!
I think as long as you do something that comes from your heart, your recipient will love it!

I received a paper butterfly necklace made by my daughter when she was 5. I wore it proudly when she gave it to me. By the way, I still have it.
The best gift that I ever gave was to my 2nd husband on his 50th birthday. I gave him my hand in marriage.
