What makes a punk band great? If it's the quality of the actual music, then no punk band has ever been great. Punk music isn't about creative chord progressions or guitar solos or great vocals, it's about how you feel when you listen to it. The last thing punk bands ever wanted to be was "sophisticated". Punk music was about bring light to social injustice, and screaming about it loud enough to get the attention of anyone who would listen. The actual music was just an audible expression of their angst and desperation. In order to be a great punk band, you didn't have to be great musicians, you just had to be genuine. Bands like Television, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Social Distortion, The Ramones, and Bad Religion were all great, but I think the greatest punk band of all time was The Clash. They defended the weak and the poor, they spoke out against the powerful and oppresive, and wrote brilliant songs.
I do agree with you about one thing, though. The Sex Pistols did suck. Not because they couldn't play their instruments, but because they were phonies. They were a manufactured band who always cared more about how they looked than they did about what they were saying. Until The Clash came along, American punk was about a revolution, and British punk was about fashion.

It has to be the Clash. The clash is one of the biggest influences in music. There is a reason they are called the only band that ever mattered.
