- 4x - 8y = - 4
4x + y = 11----------ADD
- 7y = 7
y = - 1

multiply the first equation by -4 to eliminate the x's by adding the equations. OR, you can multiply the second equation by -2 to eliminate the y's--your choice

-4(x + 2y = 1) ---> -4x - 8y = -4
4x + y = 11 ------> 4x + y = 11 add these together

-7y = 7
y = -1

now plug -1 back into either of first two equations in place of y and find the x

using elimination method:
multiply the first equation by 4
4x + 8y = 4
then subtract this in equation to
4x + y = 11
-
4x + 8y = 4
________
0 -7y = 7

-7y = 7
y = -1

going back to eq.1 then subs. y =-1
x + 2y = 1
x + 2(-1) = 1
x - 2 = 1
x = 1+2
x = 3

multiply the bottom equation through by (-2):
x + 2y = 1
-8x - 2y = -22

then add the equations together:
x - 8x +2y - 2y = 1 - 22
-7x = -21

Divide through by (-7) to solve for x:
x= (3)

Then solve for y by substituting x into one of your original equations:
(3) + 2y = 1

Rearrange and then divide to solve for y:
2y = 1 - (3)
2y = (-2)
y = (-1)

SO... x=3, y=-1
or (3,-1)
