I would pick George Washington... here's why:
He was offered ABSOLUTE POWER. And, he turned it down. He understood (and exemplified) the concept of how unchecked power is a force of evil. He set the precedents that the presidents that came after him followed.. He LED us in the right path.

Thomas Jefferson, born in Virginia 1743, was an accomplished architect, naturalist, and statesman. He helped call the first Continental Congress, drafted the Declaration of Independence, assisted in forming the influential state of Virginia's constitution, and established the decimal coinage system. His used classical aspects of architecture and furniture with innovative improvements still often used today. In his first term as President he ended many threats of piracy in the war against Tripoli, admitted Ohio into the Union and managed the Louisiana Purchase. In his second term his most notable act was the prohibition of the slave trade. In retirement he acted as an elderly statesman, guiding other politicians and helped find the University of Virginia. His legacy influenced other Americans such as Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy.
Then there are some who didn't and don't like him at all

Abraham Lincoln held this country together during the most
dangerous time in our history. Dispite horrible loss of life,
great hostility towards himself, and doubt at times, he never
gave up in his attempt to keep the country united as one nation.
