Excuse me? Do people honestly believe the majority deserve such a thing? As a majority, what would you need it for? W/E you can't accomplish in a 45 minute Social Studies classroom from elementary to HS, you probably won't accomplish in a month. From reading that, you've probably inferred I'm some uneducated black person who hates the world, feels unprivileged & emotionally abused by the US social system. You're wrong. I've been exposed to all cultures & I accept each one. I was raised with & by the majority, & my best friends are of the majority, even though I am a 16 year old "black" female. I think a White History month would be the most ignorant addition to the US holiday chart.. & would do nothing but increase the racial tension between minorities and the majority. My ? is, why do white people feel the need to have their own "month" & "clubs" in school? Is it possible to be SO ungrateful? I'm could be just as lost as some of you right now..so enlighten me.

For the same reason any other culture would want to show pride in their ancestry . Just because someone is white doesn't mean their ancestors beat slaves or killed Indians , which is how they are portrayed in history . Just as not all black people are descendants of slaves .

I think you are the ignorant one if you feel any other race should not have pride in their ancestors . Do you feel that that all white people owned slaves ? You have been brain washed because only a small percent did . Have you ever heard of the problems the white Irish people went through ?

"You're wrong. I've been exposed to all cultures & I accept each one" - You obviously dont .

What a coincidence, I am doing an article on "Why Can't We Have a White History Month" as this topic has resurfaced amongst some entities in the Defense arena and gained a decent amount of visibility in the Equal Opportunity world. I think that there are some good points that have been brought out here. Does anyone mind if I use a few excerpts from their statements?

I would also like to ask, how do you feel the adding of this month would increase racial tensions, what does that look like to you? Also, help me to understand your statement about being ungrateful.

Thank you.

Okay...I hear and understand you, but why do you feel we need a Black History Month? I understand that our country has, unfortunately, opressed African-Americans for many, many years, but I feel that having a month in which we celebrate the history of African-Americans is a form of reverse racism. Now, I'm NOT saying that we need a White History Month. We don't. But why not a Native American History Month or an Irish History Month or a Women History Month? My point is, we don't need a whole month dedicated to the history of a single minority while all the other minorities get shafted. The same argument is there for clubs in schools. And why do you call whites ungrateful? I think you may genuinely want equality, but you seem to be going about the wrong way to get it...

Since when is their a need for a white history "month"? We've got the whole year - what do we need just one month for? And by the same reasoning, why should blacks get just one month for history... and the shortest one at that!? I have NO NEED to have a "white history month", but as someone who is aware of just how phenomenally ignorant most people are of ANY history we ought to have a history DECADE to get people caught up on what is correct and what isn't.

Being as how you are 16 and seem to have the world all figured out I would like to offer you a little perspective. Have you ever been to Memphis, TN? Atlanta, GA? San Diego, CA? Tucson, AZ? And many, many more examples. White people don't compose such an overwhelming majority any more. Times have changed, in many places in the U.S. whites are the minority. I don't believe in white clubs or white history month, but I also don't believe in black clubs, black history month, Black Entertainment Television, Black Miss USA, or anything of the sort. I don't think anything should be delineated by race, be it white, black, hispanic, asian, or any other.

The white people who feel that way claim it's because they want it to be equal; "Well, if we have a Black History Month, why not a White History Month? If there's B.E.T. (black entertainment television) why not have white entertainment television, W.E.T. (<-- which actually sounds more like a porno channel lol). But I think the real reason a lot of them feel that way is because they fear they are losing what is called "white privilege". Privileges that aren't necessarily earned but granted to them on the basis of skin color. And my thoughts are this; there will ALWAYS be such a thing as white privilege in America. There will always be such a thing as racial/socioeconomic disparity, where whites will reap certain benefits at the expense of minorities. I don't care how much they try to deny it, it is true. I am not blaming all white people for that because if you were born into a life of privilege it isn't really your fault but we all need to acknowledge that and stop pretending as if it doesn't exist. And white people who are so adamant about having a White History Month really need to examine their motives. Are you really interested in preserving your heritage, which there's really no need to do since EVERY month is White History Month. Or are you afraid that Blacks, Latinos, Indians, etc... are stealing the spotlight from you? Everyone should examine their reasons for believing in what they believe in.

black people are a different minority than asians and latinos
for once the majority of them their ancestors have been on this land longer, (longer than most white people in this country) and they still are oppressed

the majority of them who are here now ancestors have been here before america was even called a country for over 300 years!!

most of the black people's in america, their ancestors came here in chains. they didn't decide to move here

black people play a different role in american history than all the minorities do. they and european farmers helped built america, they made it what it is today.

u realized the ancestors of these immigrant european farmers are taught mostly european history (their history) most of the days of the year !!! when we all know that black ppl played a MAJOR ROLE and even black history month can't even educate ppl of the things black people did for this country.

america is not a black nation by statitics ( they are more white ppl in this nation)
but by contributions it definetly is a black nation
hip hop rock and roll etc are one the too most popular genres of music in the world (black american music)

most kids DON'T know that a black woman was the first to make a million dollars in this country
or that a black man invented the air conditioner
or that a black man was the first to do a successful open heart surgery.

black history month is needed IT"S AMERICAN HISTORY

without black ppl in this country coming here as slaves no one would want to move into this country it wouldn't look ANYTHING of what it did today

there are black people and black history month in europe but it's not as important in europe

the nations in europe didn't need slaves to become a power they already were before they had them and they already were countries

all the other answers need help

To enlighten the ignorant people:

There IS a Native American History month, it is taking place AS WE SPEAK. Hispanic Heritage Month just passed. There is an Asian-Pacific Islander History month, a Women's History Month, an Irish History Month. Black people are not the only ones with a month. The months are very evenly spread out among cultures so I don't even see why this is still an issue.

It's like having a Heterosexual History Month. That's one huge "WTF" there. "Why do the gay people have their own month? Boo hoo! We're the poor disadvantaged heterosexual people! We need a month!"

In my opinion, the people who spout nonsense like that are the people of the younger generation, the apathetic generation who discounts much of our country's racist history and are baffled by the idea that not all men and women are treated equally here.

How can we solve this? Education is the only way.

Well to be honest, it most likely has to do with equality. You want those months or clubs, so do some white people.

I dont, but its just the prevailing thought of the small group of people who want that.

My question to you is how is that thought "ungrateful" to want those things? Ungrateful for what exactly?

Actually they do HAVE white history months.

As well as organizations, & scholarships for EACH of these white ethnicities. There are even "white" scholarships to attend historically black colleges. There is also a Naawp.

Black ppl use the term "black" bc historically we didn't know the origin of our heritage (Africa is a continent NOT a country) so we were stuck with "*****", "colored" etc. Most other ppl of African descent call themselves Nigerian, Jamaican, Hatian etc., not just "black", which doesn't really tell you anything. Why would anyone who knows their heritage use a "color" to describe who they were. Latinos don't call themselves browns & Asians don't call themselves yellows. The only ppl who in the past have done this have been self-proclaimed "racist" whites. If they want to not be labelled racist for using the generic race description "white" they should be complaining to theri "kkk" or "neo-nazis" ancestors of today & the past for ruining it for you-NOT to us-Thomas H.

Eddie M.-so obviously as much complaining that goes on, you must need it.
