On a radio ad aimed firstly at anyone who may be comitting benefit fraud, it stated that the Government has access to EVERYONES bank and building society accounts, knows every credit card transaction you make plus info on loans ect so they know all about your lifestyle etc. I think this is extremely intrusive and whatever happened to the Data Protection Act? I think we should all be very concerned and seriously worried about what the Government actually holds on files about each and everyone of us. Ever likely they want us all to have these accounts plus credit cards. Think it's time to be closing any accounts, cutting up credit cards and from now on only using cash!

It was on a Local Radio station in Stoke. I am not paranoid, I just feel that it is an intrusion into people's privacy. The DVLA issue Unpaid Tax penalties within two weeks of car tax not being paid. I suppose if you've never put your name and address into the system then they don't know you exist, this is how so many people get away without paying tax, they don't register on the electoral role, or fill insimilar forms. They also only ever take cash in payment. I am well aware that it is "scare tactics", but do you trust them?

I don't give two hoots if the government knows what's in my bank account, or what I buy and where I buy it from, - doesn't bother me at all. I know the theory of privacy so don't get me wrong, but why is it a problem?

Words are a powerful tool - you can certainly play with words in order to scare people - don't believe all that you hear. If this were to be the case they would have the benefit fraud dealt with within a matter of months - the fact is the Government nor the Benefit agency have none of these details on individuals.

It was the same with car tax - I can't remember the slogan off the top of my head - but really, it those words were true then people wouldn't be running their vehicles right now without tax...or even a licence!

It is simply a scare tactic - there are ways of finding things out from various applications made, previous dealings with the authorities, someone grassing you up.

As for the credit card transactions - really? Then why is there so much fraud at all levels!?

they have had this info for years - as an ex police officer i have to say that they don't just scour the lists to see who has too much money or who is spending what .

police are able to access accounts if a crime is involved IE - a murder or if someone has gone missing under very suspicious circumstances but it is a very complex procedure and the first hint that there are no justifiable reasons for having the info and the banks refuse it.
the same applies with mobile phones etc.

it doesn't worry me that the government might be having access to this info - what worries me is that the criminals can have access to it with identity fraud and card cloning etc -i had my card cloned to the value of £2000.00 a couple of years ago.

it also doesn't worry me that my DNA is on a database or that there are so many CCTV about.

however just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

You raise interesting topics of discussion, but your persuasive ability is torpedoed by not being able to give a citation or link or indeed any way at all to confirm the ad you mention as the sole supporting evidence of your claim.

And just like your Mom told you don;t believe everything you read, don't believe everything in your radio even if you did hear it with your own ears.

That is not correct. If you commit benefit fraud the authorities can use the Proceeds of Crime Act to examine your financial details but only with a production order or some such warrant. They to not have unfettered access without an order.

In theory they could, the tax man has access to bank/BS accounts because tax is paid on them.
It is like CCTV there are only enough people to look at things after an event

What happened to all of our privacy rights is " The Big Old Bush/Cheney Regime " Do not fool yourself, they are like the SS or the Gestapo in their efforts to find ghosts behind every door. It is sad that we have become a nation of wire taps and secrets... but we elected them.. only we, the people, can make it right again!

just because your paranoid, doesn't mean you don't have enemies, but the question is are you paranoid enough

ok but seriously, it would make sence if people were being dragged into the street from their homes and carted off to work camps but they aren't,
