Everyone seems to be interested in helping you figure out which kind they are, or telling you a similar story.

The answer to your question, your flat is warm. They are trying to find someplace to live for the winter, so they aren't killed by frosts and freezes. They are coming in through your windows or walls. The best solution for you at this point is to use a hand held vacuum to suck them up. In the spring, it will be worth some time and effort to seal up those gaps, so they can't come back.

They will tend to live near their winter shelter, and their eggs will be laid nearby as well, so your epidemic will likely continue for years to come, unless you seal those points of entry.

Ultimately they are harmless, and if you don't mind sharing the space, they're okay. Some (the Asian ones) may bite, if handled (thus the vacuum). Neither the native nor the Asian ones will pay any rent, no matter how you might try. FYI

Good luck-

This is a great question, I used to live in an old flat (it was an old big house made into flats) and there were ladybirds EVERYWHERE! Got really annoying! I always thought it was something to do with the wooden window frames - do you have those? Everywhere else I have lived had double glazing and I never had the problem anywhere else.

What colour are they? Are they orange with lots of black spots on them? If so, they could be the harlequin ladybird. I don't know that much about them, but I have found two of them in my flat over the last few days!

If you go to the following website, they want you to record any sightings of them:

Good luck!

I had the same problem at the end of this summer. Apparently every year there's always a lot of one type of bug I guess.. caterpillars, ladybugs, etc.. They say that they hibernate in your walls for winter, most of them dry up and die but once they hide you'll never see them again. They also say that when you try to make them go away like if they're on your window or something and you just hit them off they leave a some sort of scent or something that attracts even more. That part I know is very true because I hit one off the screen of my bedroom window and had 13 come back it even happened when I sprayed stuff to try and kill them, this lasted less than a week for me, haven't seen any since. They really won't hurt anything, it's just the year of the ladybug! :)

You might have other bugs you can't see. Ladybirds are beneficial bugs & eat the ones which are destructive to a garden.

If there are a lot of them and inside, you probably have Asian beetles instead of ladybugs. Lady bugs are orange/red with black dots. Asian beetles are a yellowish with black dots.

In a couple weeks they be disappearing. In the meantime, vacuum them up. If you squish one, it can leave a stain and will stink. They also bite. When soy bean fields are picked, these critters are looking for a warm home. They eat the aphids off the soy beans. They will die off soon.
