Bags, I mean. Do you bring your own reusable bags to the store? I have 4 reusable canvas shopping bags - but only remember to bring them with me occasionally...

WOW - I wouldn't give you a thumbs down for using plastic bags. I use them and paper ones and the canvas ones too....

Birdy - how could anyone not like you?

This is truly amazing!!! Does no one care, or at least so few, to reduce the problems associated with using plastic bags!

The tree huggers many years ago talked Americans into the plastic bag. Plastics are produced from oil. There is no way to create more oil in any of our lifetimes. Paper is produced from fast growing trees, planted specifically for the production of paper. Paper grocery bags are also recycled for production of more paper. Trees are replanted and available for more paper production. In other words, paper comes from a renewable source. Plastic bags do not.

In addition, plastic bags are most difficult to handle in the recycle process. As the Mayor of San Francisco I think stated, it costs 17 cents to recycle a plastic bag. In addition, recyclers don't want the plastic bag.

When I am asked that question at the store, I reply "paper, I want to use less oil."

Use of the canvas bag is excellent.

I get plastic most of the time, but that's because I use them as garbage liners, lunch bags, and to clean the litter box. But sometimes I will ask for paper because I use them over again too. I also have one canvas bag, but I haven't used it at the store yet!

There is one of my earliest issues as to what people get
what they pay for from their investments. In the oldest
grocery stores across the world paper is not accepted.
Plastic is more viable and reinforced shopping carts are
the real example. I use both returnable no charge liners
and smaller carry bucket style that can be purchased.
Recent canvas is excellent, also many nylon, and dacron
products do the right job for food handlers. Courtesy
cart products is the sign of warehouse club price shopping.

I used to get plastic all the time, until I realized they are not recycable. Now I want paper. I too like the reusable bags (great idea), but I don't want to carry them around in my car! Makes it look less tidy

I reuse the plastic and paper bags from the store, for garbage, so I don't feel so guilty about the convenience of store bags.

We don't have the choice of paper/plastic here in the UK which really annoys me. We just have plastic. So I'm trying to use my own a lot more, but I do tend to forget them myself sometimes.

I am enchanted by the idea of "my own". But right now, there's not a grocery near me inside 100 miles that still does paper. It's forgotten here. When I could, I ALWAYS asked for paper.
