Can you imagine using that same voice to an adult we just met? "Hi Saraaah!! How are YOOOOOUUUUUuuuuu?!!!!" Why do we do this?

There was supposedly a study that said that children learned better when they were talked to in a sing song voice. There were some studies for it and other ones disproving it.

That's maybe not why people do it, but it's probably been passed down from parents to children.

I don't speak like that, mainly because I feel totally stupid, because I find that everyone else who does it sounds like a moron, but also just because babies are people too, why should we treat them like absolute idiots just because they can't speak yet? It's so ridiculous. My friend has a 2-year old and whenever I'm round there and there are other adults there I just marvel at how stupid they sound. The best/worst was his first birthday party. I couldn't believe that 30 grown-ups did not feel like a bunch of loonies talking in high-pitched voices and blowing raspberries and stuff.

Leave it to a baby to turn a perfectly normal logical adult into a babbling idiot. I don't know what it is, probably because they are so darn cute, they just can't help themselves. It's called happy talk, trying to get the little cutie to smile at them.

Of course you must speak to a baby in normal ways as well, so they learn the proper way to talk.

Hahaha lol
good question.
It's not like they understand us anyways ...
I wonder if BABIES would skip the baby talk and just talk intelligently if all the adults that talk to them would talk more intelligently ....
I wonder if that confuses them ....
:O)

Because it would startle the baby for me to boom out in my loud adult voice "HOW ARE YOU LITTLE ONE?"

We do this because it is the one time when we can allow ourselves to be taken back to the innocence of our youth.
