As far as pay it really depends on the keeper position, starting pay can suck but it is not impossible to have a family and a nice house. Even then you can move up and many curators and headkeepers make really good money. What is a few years with a lower pay (but still enough to live off of) if you can work your way up and still live your dream.
Some of the more better paying jobs out there you will find with the govt, try looking with DRN (dept natural resources) and the USFWS (us fish and wildlife). Also there can be some better paying jobs through Universities be it teaching or research based.
Back to zoos though, check out aza.org, they always have job listings.

What the person forgot to tell you is that a curator almost always needs a PhD and that there needs to be a lot of attrition before somebody is able to work their way up to head keeper and even then it's a manual job.
I've been working with animals for over 20 years, and since the field is so competitive salaries really stink. Unless your willing to go into debt and become a vet, then your always taking a chance unless your also willing to work in a lab.
I have to say, after 20 years of experience, go into public health instead. The science is pretty much the same, is very interesting, but less competitive and better paying.

Most people study animals because of their love and passion for them..not the money they will make. As you know...most jobs working with animals will not make you rich. However, you can still make a decent living studying animals depending on who you work for and what sort of degree you have. Typically, the higher the degree, the higher the salary. Government jobs and zoos tend to pay less, while non-profits and environmental consultant firms pay more. You might also try working for a university.

I work in wildlife management, and I'm not going to lie to you, I started out making 24,000 a year. Over the course of 4 years though, a little on the job learning, and my own private efforts and some of my own personal business on the side in wildlife management while working with the state government, I now gross over 85,000 a year. Not too bad in my opinion, but it's hard to do and I had to work hard, I do have a M.S. though.

of direction it incredibly is. in certainty, I strongly have faith that a thank you to reform the beef-industry into treating animals extra helpful would be with the aid of meat-eaters who insist on extra helpful therapy, and take their money to those extra humane procedures while given the alternative. case in point, evaluate the egg. 10 years in the past, you quite did no longer have something different than a caged-chicken form egg (till you went to a area of craftsmanship form keep or to a farm.) Then diverse recommendations began coming obtainable. it incredibly is quite elementary no remember the place you at the instant are to locate an eggland's ultimate cage-unfastened vegetarian unfastened-selection determination, and whilst this continues to be no longer the very ultimate therapy available, the only reason that plenty progression in the direction of humane therapy became made became by way of fact of egg-eaters who insisted on extra helpful therapy. seem at veal (calves.) there's a circulate happening referred to now as "pink veal" the place the calves are fed like they could be, dealt with like they could be, and many times left with 'nanny cows' who nurse them and supply them the social touch that they choose. the only way the pink veal industry will proceed to exist and flourish over the white veal (it incredibly is extremely inhumane) is thru human beings figuring out to purchase the extra humanely dealt with meat. Now... enable's seem on the vegetarian who's wanting to help animals. it incredibly is a noble determination, yet in certainty by using taking their money faraway from farmers and ranchers who're attempting to strengthen circumstances they are surely forcing those farmers and ranchers to produce meat at a extra good fee fee to maintain up with the individuals who could care much less what the animals went with the aid of. those farmers and ranchers have not have been given any reason to hearken to those that do no longer purchase their products. in case you opt to strengthen the lives of those animals, the only way is to make it so as that they could pay attention to you, or they lose your money. So my suggestion could be to look into diverse seals of humane therapy and help those farmers and ranchers who're treating their animals extra helpful, even while it costs extra. consume much less meat, and make the beef you consume extra humanely dealt with earlier it is composed of your plate. you're making a some distance extra suitable impression than the guy who eliminates their money thoroughly from the form.
