Why is one more "definite" (not sure if that's the right word) for Universities to get a degree over the other?

Like Online schools that have an accredited notice, is that legitimate as a University. Why do careers have a favor over another?

US accreditation is confusing (and there will be exceptions) , but you can put US Institutions into 3 categories:

*Regionally accredited – The highest and most useful. The vast majority of US schools are regionally accredited. Accreditation does not mean prestige, only that it has passed a review.
*Nationally accredited – Real schools, but a lower level of accreditation. It may limit credit transfer and / or professional licensing (Certified Public Accountant, Registered Nurse, Professional Engineer).
*Unaccredited – Not worth the paper they are written on.

Whether the delivery method is online, onground, or a mix of the two is irrelevant to accreditation.

I think that answers your question, but wanted to add this for any other readers.

On top of the institution accreditation, programs within the school can have specialized or programmatic accreditation on top. This accreditation can be nice to have or need to have.

For example, a regionally accredited institution can have a law program. The law program NEEDS to be additionally accredited to allow graduates to sit for the Bar exam.

For example, a regionally accredited institution can have an MBA program. The MBA program can also have an AACSB accreditation that only a small % of schools have. This is a nice to have, but not required for any licensing or to meet other requirements.

Excellent question, as many people find this issue confusing. After all, crap school Y says that it's accredited, but what does that mean? Does that mean it's a good school? Not necessarily.

There are all sorts of types of accreditation. The minimum standard you want - what any school you're looking at must have - is regional accreditation. And if a school has this, they'll say so. I'll link, below, to a list of what you're looking for.

A lot of online schools say that they are "nationally accredited by X", which sounds great, but actually isn't that good. Some schools may hold a sort of vocational accreditation. These things generally aren't acceptable to grad schools, and aren't acceptable by some employers, and in some career paths.

Reputable universities will be regionally accredited. That usually means that they're about academics. This is the type of accreditation that matters most.

For example, if you went to a school that was not regionally accredited, and tried to go to grad school later on, they may not recognise your degree. Or if you tried to transfer to a reputable school, they may not accept your credits. Or tried to get a job based on that education - some employers may turn you away.

And know that regional accreditation is often the starting point. Your major may also need to be accredited by a professional body. For example, if you wanted to be an engineer, you'd want your university to be regionally accredited, and their engineering majors to be accredited by ABET.

I'll link, below, to an example of an accreditation statement by a reputable art school, so you know the sort of thing you should be looking for.
