Suppose you were offered this deal:

You can hold an individual record (say, single season homeruns) that would be guaranteed to stand for 100 years ... BUT

You will never, ever, ever be part of a team that plays in the World Series (much less wins it). In fact, your team will never even make the playoffs. Ever. You are guaranteed to be a superstar on a sucky franchise.

Would you take this deal?

Records fall.

Championships stand forever.

Well...not all records fall.

There are plenty of marks that will last forever.

And there is a cache' of greats who never played for a World Series winner.

So, really, there is the notion that rings are a luxury, but not a necessity; however, ego in this day and age is such a factor that if a player *were* to have a major record all to himself for the next 100+ years in lieu of never being able to be on that championship team, well, I think the guy who is the so-called "team failure" could probably live with himself and his "failings" for the remainder of his life.

Also, having many, many millions tucked away securely helps the cause, too. :-x

I would rather win the Cup. Hockey's a team game. The Cup is what people play hockey for, and the love of the game. You play to win the Cup. Not get individual records.

I would rather be on a championship team. There is nothing like the joy of sharing victory.

Ask Barry Bonds or Alex Rodriguez that question, because neither will win a championship in their careers, but own (or will own) several all-time offensive stats.

When an athlete plays any sport, their main goal should be to win a championship.

A ring is better than any individual accomplishment. Hands down.

team
baseball's all about the team.
and when i get old I could talk to my former team mates about how sweet our victory was "remember when..."
now that is cool.. if it's individual you have no joy to share it with :(
