I have got a T reg Golf GTI Turbo, last week I was driving and as I pushed the clutch down to change gear it just sort of just disappeared. I pulled over as I was a bit confused and phoned my dad, he told me to get it off of the main road I need to turn the ignition OFF and put it into 1st and just rev it to try and get it moving. I stupidly didn't listen to the part where he said turn the car OFF and tried to put it into gear with the ignition on! After crunching the gears it just seemed to fall into 1st gear but as I revved the engine it didn't move. The clutch is now fixed (a bit of metal snapped off of the pedal) and I can get 3rd and 4th gear but none of the others. I have been told that there is no way I could have completely wrecked the gear box and that I could have bent the selector!!?? I don't want to take it to a garage yet as I don't want them to rip me off! I've looked on a VW website and a new gear box is £1,250! PLEASE HELP?

Having a shop "look and evaluate" the car will not cost you much and would be worth the money spent to get the answer you need, but not the dealer. Do not buy a "new" gear box, but rather one from a wrecking yard or from a private party selling/parting out their vehicle. You can pick one up for half the price you stated. As for bending the selector, that is hard to do, and if you can find 3rd and 4th in their normal position, then the selector is not bent. To totally destroy a gear box is a tough task. It will be worth your time to find an honest shop to help you out. Find one that has or sponsors a VW race car, as they tend to be much easier on the pocket book and friendlier.

The gear box is probably still good. It sounds like you need a new clutch and throwout bearing assembly.

Sounds like you trashed the gearbox. I am impressed you got it in gear with the engine running and no clutch...had to make one hell'uva noise.
