It gets tiring to tell all of them that they're not that old... 17 is a little on the old side, that's what I did, but while it may be too late to ever play pro for me, they're not even remoltey close to an age where they can NEVER PLAY because they'll never learn. I don't think an age exists.

Too late to learn at 12- right. isn't it against the rules to use this site if you're under 13?

Everyone should play at every age! I made the mistake of playing football all the way through the collegiate level before I realized I actually enjoy hockey more so. So here I am, washed up has been at 24, accountant, who plays in some beer leagues. And you know what? Couldn't be happier. I skate like a 3 year old, stick handle like a blind man, and have the slap shot of bowl of jello, but I still get out there and still love every second.

Truth is, the odds of anyone making it pro are so slim there is no reason to even factor that into any decisions. To any kids/adults who ask if they should start, play a few times and ask yourself if you enjoy it. I love it. Love the soreness, the bruises, the occasional goal, even with no stands or crowds.

Look at Mickey Redmond; born in 1947, retired at 28 because of a back injury, and HE STILL PLAYS. He was on the radio here in Detroit and it came up a while back he hurt his shoulder in his hockey league and he was joking how they wouldn't take it easy on the beat up old guy.

If you enjoy yourself, play. Boy or girl, young or old, ice or roller, north or south. Play.

Agreed. I am I guess a newbie, but from what I have seen so far; the most annoying questions in the hockey section are:
1. who will win the cup - I don't even know if I will enjoy this question when it is down to 2 teams.
2. Am I good enough/too old/ or how to play hockey. - 13 year old kids really don't know any better, so no problem skipping over that question, but anything younger needs to go outside and play.
3. Check out my fantasy team, what should I do? - This question is like someone telling you about a good movie that you have never seen........boring.

I cut most kids some slack. And so I tell them go for it. Of course we could be opening a can of worms at home. Especially if mom and dad can't afford to get the kid into hockey.

There are far more annoying questions that are repetitive. It's amazing how often a newby will ask Who's going to win the cup. Honestly, if I knew would I tell people here or would I go lay down a huge chunk of change on the team and keep it to myself so the odds don't drop?

Y'know Jeff, I agree with you. My concern is that I would be the catalyst for some person to step out into the world of ice hockey, and that person meets up with a serious injury. Now I realize that there is no way of knowing that but I don't want to leave it to chance.

And yeah, it is the multitude of that question - or any question - that grates on me. I get tired of those "Which stick/skate is better?" questions. Take a chance dammit, the stick/skate won't make you any better.

Well, when 95% of kids have parents that work all the time or otherwise ignore them and not fulfilling their parental duties, what do you expect? When I was growing up it was the TV as the babysitter, now it is the computer/internet as the babysitter. 12-15 year olds should not be allowed online by themselves anyway. It seriously is that dangerous of a place. (look at me sounding like a old man, lol) And yes it is against the rules to be under 13 on this site.

If they are 15 and now have discovered a love for hockey then best to advise them to go into coaching. Skating is not as easy as people think and for some players, you need to have good skill to play the game.
you gotta ignore them - there is no way for us to distinguish how old ppl are on this site. I can only tell how old someone is by their spelling.

It's never too late for anyone to play hockey....anyone who knows anything about hockey and is a true fan of the game will not discourage it. For the love of the game ~ just do it!

The youth of today need to be encouraged to pursue extra curricular activities....including physical fitness and sports. I would rather encourage a youth to play hockey (even if they are just starting out - there are different levels eg. house leagues and rec. leagues....) instead of roaming the streets aimlessly or sitting on their butts watching the tube and playing Xbox.

They could even just go outside and play some road hockey!

This is a disease plaguing YA in general. The other forum I visit daily is Dancing and there's always some high school freshman worried that she can't start.

I'd rather see them on here, showing an interest in hockey than out on the street showing an interest in ????
There's a like a lot of worse places they could be searching on the internet as well. I hope you don't need examples.
