I've looked on several websites, but can't really find out what are the best places to live in Sydney. We need good primary and secondary schools; quiet location but close to shops. Close to beaches would also be an advantage! I need to fly around the country as well, so don;t want to be more than about an hour from the airport (drive or ideally train). Can anyone help?! Thanks in advance.

Hi,

There are plenty of good suburbs for families. In the inner west you can try Annandale, Rozelle or Balmain. On the lower north shore you can try Neutral Bay, Cremorne, Mosman or Crows Nest.

Northern beaches you can try Balgowlah or Fairlight.

Eastern suburbs - Randwick, Bronte or Coogee.

All of the above are good family suburbs which will not be more than an hour away from the airport.

Don't know if you have checked out the following website. We found it great when we moved to Sydney. It has a lot of information on shops, schools, doctors, parks, council services, rental prices etc. We looked at several websites too and were terribly frustrated with the lack of information. But were very happy with what we gleaned from cityhobo.

The eastern suburbs are for you. Randwick, Coogee, Bronte, Maroubra are quieter than Bondi or Dover Heights. Centennial Park and Woolahra are a closer to the city and there are some lovely houses there. The general standard of schools in Sydney is high and I have heard nothing bad about schools in the eastern suburbs.

Trains to the airport are not so easy from the eastern suburbs as the only train line goes to Bondi Junction which is fine if you live in Bondi but not if you live in Coogee. On the other hand, the eastern suburbs are close enough to the airport to make taxis a reasonable choice. Trains don't run to beachside suburbs except Cronulla south of Sydney.

i live in Victoria, I've only seen one snake in the in the wild, which was near a bushy river.i live in a neighbor hood away from the bush and i've never seen a snake or heard of a snake close to my home. as for spiders, they could be anywhere,if your frightened of funnel webs don't move to Sydney although it is a very beautiful city. Melbourne is also a beautiful city (maybe not as beautiful as Sydney) and it is also the shopping capital of Australia. the crime rate in Melbourne is also lower than Sydney.an apartment would be a good place for you to live for a few years until your used to Australia, once you've settled in and you kids are a bit older you can move into a house away from the bush where spiders and snakes are far less likely to harm, you

I don't know enough about Sydney to advise - I've been on 3 short visits - but I wish you well. Should you want to adopt a granny to ship out, please think of me!
My 2x Gt. grandparents were free settlers in Sydney back in the late 1850's and I've not yet forgiven Gt. grandad for coming back!
Lovely City (what I've seen of it) and very friendly helpful people. The harbour is magnificent - your kids will love it, I'm sure.

I only know Balmain as thats where my family live. Its a short drive to the city centre or you can catch the ferry across the harbour. It has nice shops and parks etc and its quiet. Not sure about schools tho, but I'm sure it'll be on the net somewhere.
