Step 1: Combine like terms (the x)
10x - 14 - x = - 5
9x - 14 = - 5

Step 2: Group values and variables together
9x = 14 -5
9x = 9

Step 3: Simplify
x = 9 / 9
x = 1

First gather the terms.
10x - x -14 = -5
9x - 14 = -5

Anythng you do to the both sides of the equals retains the equality. Add 14 to both sides to get all the x on one side and all the number on the other side.

9x = -5 + 14
9x = 9

Divide both sides by 9

x = 1

you combine like terms on the left side, which would make it 9x -14 = -5
then you add 14 to the -5 which is 9
then you have 9x=9
divide by 9
so it's 9/9
which reduces to 1. x=1

10x-14-x= -5

I assume you want to solve for x.

First, add 14 to both sides:

10x - x = -5 + 14

Now, collect your terms:

9x = 9

Now divide both sides by 9:

x = 1

And you are done.

10x-14-x=-5
combine the x terms
10x-x -14=-5
9x-14=-5
now add 14 to both sides
9x-14+14=-5+14
9x=9
divide both sides by 9
x=1

clean it up a little bit. 9x-14= -5. then subtract -5 from 14. in this case, add 5 to 14

2007-11-08 02:55:01 · answer #6 · answered by n986621 2 · 0 0

10x-14-x=-5
9x-14=-5
9x-14+14=-5+14
9x=9
x=1

1/4w-6=2
Multiply all by 4
w-24=8
w-24+24=8+24
w=32

3(n-4)-2n=14
3n-12-2n=14
n-12=14
n-12+12=14+12
n=26
