The best one I have experienced is World of Warcraft. I have demo-ed Everquest, Guild Wars, and Star Wars Galaxies and I think WOW is the best.

I play Everquest and like it alot, EQ2, WoW and Starwars Galaxies are ok, but a new game just came out.
"Hellsgate, London" is based on the popular graphic novel and is free to play online until you reach a certain level, then you pay a subscription fee each month.
Ask about it at your local gaming shop.

Maplestory is a free online MMORPG. It's a side-scrolling 2D action game. Might not be what everyone considers fast paced, but it's very cartoonish/anime.
